Why Do We Need to Research?
Need Help Finding a Topic?
Need Help Creating a Thesis?
Research projects help students to understand the process of inquiry. Unlike quick Google searches--grab-and-go processing of information--using research in class will strengthen a student's ability to understand an issue, connect underlying causes, and begin to find solutions to problems--exactly the kinds of things students will do once they are out of school.
Research uses tools like databases--digital collections of information--and newspapers (and other periodicals) to find primary source information. Students will examine facts as they are presented to determine if they are relevant to their own research.
Once the sources are located, students must also evalutate their sources to determine if they are reliable and credible. Finally, student must understand how to cite their sources correctly to give proper credit to the authors' ideas--and take proper credit for the student's own ideas!
